mEET dR. lISA gENGO, nd, PAC, IFMCP

Dr. Lisa Gengo began her career in healthcare as a forensic toxicologist before realizing that her calling was to help patients directly. She set out to do so by first becoming a cardiac surgery physician’s assistant, then quickly became the Chief Physician Assistant at New York Presbyterian’s Weill Cornell Hospital only six months after graduating from PA school.

Since childhood, Dr. Lisa Gengo has been preoccupied with learning how to live healthfully. Growing up in a household with an Italian father and Swedish mother, she had the privilege to learn the art of cooking and eating healthy foods and learned early the value of caring for yourself daily. While working as a cardiac surgery PA, Dr. Gengo realized that often those who were in a cardiac emergency or the late stages of cardiac care did not have the benefit of a healthy lifestyle.

Seeing so many patients struggling with the consequences of years of unhealthy living made her realize that it was imperative to get to patients early and teach them to take a holistic approach to how they nurture their bodies. It was this desire to learn how to nurture and heal patients prior to their times of crisis that led her to enroll in a Naturopathic School and immerse herself in the discipline of Functional Medicine.

Since toxicology and functional medicine are both investigative fields, which look to uncover the answers below the surface to get to the root cause, she is now known as the “Health Detective.”

Dr. Gengo received her Doctorate of Naturopathy from the University of Bridgeport, College of Naturopathic Medicine, and her certification in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. She is a certified practitioner actively practicing multiple facets of functional medicine, specializing in cardiovascular and metabolic syndromes such as diabetes and obesity, autoimmune disorders like adrenal fatigue, neurological and neuro-degenerative, hormonal, and gut-digestive disorders.

Dr. Gengo’s goal as a Functional Medicine Physician is to provide patients with the most effective treatments possible to help them heal holistically from illness, disease, and injuries. As an experienced and highly skilled physician, Dr. Gengo has more than 30 years of clinical experience caring for her patients. She focuses on preventive healthcare and nutrition and has extensive experience working with chronic illnesses and complex cases.

The Functional Medicine Approach

The functional medicine model is an individualized, patient-centered, science-based approach that empowers patients and practitioners to work together to address the underlying causes of disease and promote optimal wellness. It requires a detailed understanding of each patient's genetic, biochemical, and lifestyle factors and leverages that data to direct personalized treatment plans that lead to improved patient outcomes.

One Condition, Many Causes    One Cause, Many Conditions

By addressing the root cause of a patient's illness rather than chasing symptoms, functional medicine specialists can decode the complexity of their medical issues. They may find one condition has many different causes; likewise, one cause may result in many other conditions. As a result, functional medicine treatment targets each patient's specific disease manifestations. Now, you can see why Dr. Gengo is considered a Health Detective.
